12 minutes and 28 seconds

OMG . . . that is what I have to say about it.

When I go to see a movie, I try to know as little about about a movie as I can. I guess it is the same with books. You once mentioned that you were reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami. You suggested that I give it a whirl. As you know, I am not much of a "reader." I read when I have to but prefer audio books. There was no audio book to be found at the library so I picked up a regular book. It was as thick as the bible and scared me away.

Well, now I got a subscription to Audible.com as a way to pick up books for some freelance illustration work that I had been doing for that consulting firm. I went past the introductory time period because my wife wanted me to read those Shades of Grey books. Egads . . . I didn't bother to look to see if they had those books at the library out of embarrassment because they are basically very naughty romance novels. And because of my little interest in the books, I discovered the 2X button on my iPod which saved my sanity. I just completed the second of those and my wife is very happy and being very naughty.

But some time had passed and I had racked up 3 book credits with my monthly subscription to Audible, so I went searching for audio books. And there it was, list price $81.17 . . . The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Member price $56.82 or 1 Credit. I auto purchase 1 credit a month for about $15 so I jumped on it.

Last night I fell asleep in bed after about three minutes. I was hooked but I was tired. No reflection on the book, me falling asleep. I decided to relax and listen more today. I am so hooked and feel the need to ask why you didn't push a little more with the book. The guy is out of work, collecting unemployment, doesn't really know what he wants to do, but wants work writing for a legal firm, his wife finds him possible work writing poetry that he is not interested in, he is a house husband, she is a writer and a freelance illustrator, there is tension between the two, and it all is happening in Japan.

OMG . . . there are just far too many twisted (alternate universe like) ties between my life and yours and this story. I have no idea where this book is going but I am so hooked and just 12:28 in (12:28 not reflected in the picture).—NY

  1. LOL! One minute more and it just turned seductive. So much more intriguing than Shades of Grey. I have no idea where this book is headed. — NY

  2. Oh, it gets weirder by the page. Er, minute. I put it down for awhile and have yet to finish it. I'm terrible at finishing books. I've had two spurts of intense book reading in my life: when I was in fourth and fifth grade and then again when I lived in Japan (for obvious reasons). I always think I should try to book binge again, but you know what happens...TV beckons...
