Painting and Performance

This was a shot from the art exhibition that I went to in Chelsea Monday night. The artist Tomo Mori displayed her paintings but also painted the colored dots on an glass office in the center of the room. The photo is of a man watching a dancer perform inside that glass office. —NY

  1. I"m impressed that you go to art openings. I don't go to any events related to my work. I was personally invited to a big industry party by a big-deal guy in SF (I've been covering him for 10 years) and I didn't go. He said, "How do you expect life to happen if you don't show up?"

It's something I struggle with. Such things are really not my thing. Do I have to do things that aren't authentic to me to prove to the universe that I'm "showing up"? There must be a happy medium, no? I know this new phase of my life depends on me "showing up", and I agree that I should venture out to do things that push my boundaries. I'm going to talk to my life coach about it tomorrow, during my first session, but just so you know, I'm looking for her to absolve me of my guilt for just wanting to stay home.

  2. Believe me, I didn't feel like going. I met her at the Japan Day event last year. I was glad I went and enjoyed the work, but Monday would not have been my choice of days to go out. Fortunately it was only a 20 minute walk away. So not too bad! And it did have the added bonus of walking home at night with the much less crowded streets and long dark shadows everywhere.
