The inside of my laptop. It was getting really slow, and I was still on the 10.5.8 operating system. So the IT director installed a new solid state drive and extra ram and got me up to Mountain Lion. No more beach balls! Everything so much faster. He said I could get 1-2 more years out the machine. I had debated whether or not I should thank him with a gift or if I actually deserve the tuneup after years of writing for CH+D and 7x7. I paid for the hardware, but his labor was free. I already made my decision, but I'd like to hear your thoughts before I reveal my plan.—SF

  1. I think it is perfectly fine to give the guy a small gift since he did you a favor. How much was the hardware? I am still on 10.68 but by choice. I typically don't pay for an upgrade till I hit a wall and I'm forced into it. I read a review from someone once that said Lion made his computer work like his iPad. And I just recently up dated my iPad and I hate the new style. Much like I hate the style of the new Microsoft Office. Everything is getting lighter, they are using thin fonts and both my iPad and MS Office are just visually difficult to use.

  2. I am now up to 10.8.5. And, I just got the notification that my iPhone 5S (gold) is on the way!

I paid $177 for the Solid State Drive and I think $75 for the extra ram. I was thinking of getting him a $50 gift card to Spruce, a really nice restaurant down the street. It would cover a good portion of a dinner of burgers and cocktails for him and his wife. I didn't do it, though. People were saying that I deserved the tune up and that he just needs a little something. I tried to make him carrot muffins yesterday, and of course I screwed it up. What kinds of things would you recommend? No bottles of liquor, either--I have my suspicions that he's a very functional alcoholic.

    1. My stand-by is a $25 gift certificate for Starbucks. The places are everywhere and you really can spend it in one go if you like or your can have free coffee all week if you are a regular coffee drinker. And if you don't like Starbucks you can always give it away. LOL, a few years ago I broke down near home and pulled into a large estate entry with a security guard. The guy was friendly and let me leave my car there till I could call my mechanic and get it started. Turns out it was the Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church. 18 acre estate for some top members. I came back a few days later with a $20 gift certificate from Dunkin Dounuts. Funny thing was when I went back the security guard was different and seemed very concerned with me pulling into the place. I gave him the envelop and asked him to give it to the other guy. I guess he was concerned when I pulled up for no apparent reason. Believe it or not I knew they were in the area but didn't know that the property is right next to apartment complex. I guess have famous neighbors! Well, till he died.
