I bought a Pyrex mixing bowl at the grocery store and as I put it in the hot dishwater, it shattered. So I carefully gathered all the shrapnel and put it in a box to return to the store. With the money I got back, I purchased a package of gourmet biscotti, which I am still very much enjoying.—SF

  1. Yikes! That is scary! Kind of reminds me of when a hot flaming piece of a non-stick skillet popped out while I was cooking about 15 years ago. So glad the flaming molten metal didn't hit me. But then again if it had I probably could have sued and would be working because I wanted to not because I had to.

Not being the suing type I just marveled over how lucky I was and so did my friend who was there with me (witness!). Then I just chucked the 2 year old pan now that it had a pea sized divot in it.

I could use some gourmet biscotti right now!

  2. It was shocking to say the least, particularly because Pyrex is called Pyrex because it's supposed to withstand high temperatures. I mean, I had my hands submerged in this dishwater--it wasn't that hot. It shattering on contact must have been the result of a production flaw.

And your flaming Teflon torpedo sounds positively frightening. Still not sold on Teflon, although they've probably improved the product greatly since its introduction.

  3. Oh that pan was back during my bachelor days and was a K-Mart no-name brand special.
