Hurricane Sandy

The nice thing about hurricanes vs tornadoes is you have time to prepare. We filled up our cars with gas and I jammed water bottles in the freezer to so when the power did go we had plenty of ice to keep things from melting quickly. We were fortunate enough to have only lost power for a little more than five days. We had running water and a camp stove which served to cook and heat water for washing. We were very lucky in that the power (and heat) came back the first night temps dropped into the 30s. The forecast for Monday is lows in the 20s. It wasn't a pleasant experience but there are other people still without power and others who lost their homes and lives. We were quite fortunate.—NY

  1. This may sound a little strange, but I love preparedness. I love to get things ready for trips and strong weathery things. I remember in grade school we lived on an Army base and the siren went off signaling a (possible) tornado. Deep down, I knew a tornado wouldn't really touchdown, but that did stop me from filling my doll's crib with sleeves of saltine crackers. Also, on this most recent trip to LA, I packed an entire suitcase and wore only 10% of the clothes. So I appreciate this post on sooooo many levels, the least of which is knowing that you like preparedness, too.

  2. By the way, it's interesting that such huge trees came down, but some of those skimpy road signs are still in tact.
